On October 1st, we come together to celebrate National Seniors Day, a time to honour and recognise the invaluable contributions of the older generations who helped shape the world we live in today. For us at IBEW Local 993, it’s a day to celebrate our retired members—skilled electricians who dedicated their careers to bringing power to the families of British Columbia. Their hard work, expertise, and commitment to their craft are the reasons we have the modern, reliable electrical infrastructure that powers our homes, schools, and businesses today.
The Power Behind the Lights: A Legacy of Service
The retired members of IBEW 993 played a pivotal role in electrifying British Columbia, from the early days of infrastructure development to the complex systems we rely on now. These electricians worked tirelessly to install and maintain the power lines, transformers, and electrical systems that brought light and energy to communities across the province. Without their dedication, many of the remote areas and growing cities in British Columbia might not have had access to reliable electricity when they needed it most.
It’s easy to take for granted the simple act of flipping a switch and having the lights turn on, but behind every light bulb, outlet, and powered device is the legacy of skilled tradespeople who laid the foundation for our modern way of life. Our retirees are the ones who, often working in challenging and sometimes dangerous conditions, brought power to rural areas, industrial centres, and urban landscapes alike. Their expertise ensured that families could enjoy warm homes, schools could operate efficiently, and businesses could thrive, all thanks to the steady flow of electricity.
Building the Infrastructure of British Columbia
As British Columbia grew and developed, so did the demand for reliable electrical infrastructure. IBEW 993 members were integral to meeting that demand. From large-scale hydroelectric projects to residential wiring, they were at the forefront of building the electrical backbone that supports the province’s growth.
Many of our retirees spent decades working on projects that not only brought power to homes and businesses but also helped to fuel the industrial and economic expansion of British Columbia. Their contributions have enabled the development of key sectors, including forestry, mining, and manufacturing, all of which relied on the power systems they built.
Through their commitment to quality and safety, IBEW 993 members ensured that the electrical systems they installed were dependable and long-lasting. Today, we continue to benefit from the standards of excellence they established, and their work continues to serve as the foundation for our current and future generations of electricians.
A Lasting Impact on Future Generations
The contributions of retired IBEW 993 members go beyond the physical infrastructure they built. They also passed down their knowledge and skills to the next generation of electricians, ensuring that the high standards of safety, quality, and professionalism remain at the core of everything we do. Many of our retirees mentored young apprentices, sharing their expertise and instilling in them the importance of craftsmanship and integrity.
Their legacy lives on in the electricians of today, who continue to carry the torch forward. The systems they helped create are still in use, powering the lives of British Columbians and enabling the province to remain competitive and connected in an increasingly technological world.
Honouring Our Retired Members
As we celebrate National Seniors Day, we extend our deepest gratitude to the retired members of IBEW 993. These men and women dedicated their lives to ensuring that the people of British Columbia could enjoy the benefits of modern electricity. They worked with skill and perseverance to ensure that power flowed to every corner of the province, from the smallest rural towns to the bustling urban centres.
Their contributions to the electrical industry have made British Columbia a better place to live and work, and for that, we owe them our thanks. The lights in our homes, the power that fuels our industries, and the technology that keeps us connected all trace back to their hard work, and their legacy continues to shine brightly in the world around us.
On this National Seniors Day, let’s take a moment to reflect on the immense contributions of our retired members, and let’s continue to honour their legacy by upholding the values they stood for—dedication, quality, safety, and service to the community. Thank you to the retired members of IBEW 993 for your hard work, your wisdom, and for bringing light to the people of British Columbia.
