International Women’s Day: Building a Stronger Union Together

Today, on International Women’s Day, we celebrate the women who have helped build the IBEW and strengthen the labour movement.

Women have played an important role in our union’s history. Mary Honzik was one of the first women in the IBEW and became its first female organizer. Cathy Spielfogel became the IBEW’s first linewoman in 1972. Renata Loveless became a pioneering female foreman. Asenath McLeod became the IBEW’s first woman business manager. Gina Cooper became the first woman international vice-president. Liz Shuler, an IBEW member, became the first woman elected president of the AFL-CIO.

These women helped open doors for others. Their courage and leadership helped make our union stronger.

At IBEW 993, we know that inclusion and diversity matter. Our union is strongest when everyone feels welcome, respected, and supported. When more people can see a future for themselves in the trades, our union grows stronger and our industry gets better.

Our local has taken real steps forward. We have supported programs that encourage more women to join the electrical trade. We have promoted opportunities for training, recruitment, and mentorship. We have also supported efforts to remove barriers for women, Indigenous workers, and other underrepresented groups in our industry.

This work matters. It helps build a union that reflects the communities we serve. It helps create better workplaces. It also helps make sure the next generation knows there is a place for them in the IBEW.

We know there is still more work to do. Women in the trades can still face barriers, unfair treatment, and outdated attitudes. That is why we must keep working to build a culture of respect and solidarity in every jobsite, classroom, and union hall.

On behalf of IBEW 993, I want to thank the women in our local and across the IBEW for all that you do. Your skill, leadership, and hard work make our union better every day.

Happy International Women’s Day.
