IBEW Local 993 is proud to honour three outstanding apprentices who represent the future of our trade: Brian Ouellette of IBEW Local 1003, Alexandrea Livingston-Walker of IBEW Local 230 and Jonathan-Derrick of IBEW 993. Their commitment to safety, quality and continual learning embodies everything our apprenticeship programs strive to achieve.
The Power of Apprenticeship
These apprenticeships are made possible through the Western Joint Electrical Training Society (WJETS) – a partnership between Locals 230, 993 and 1003 and the CLR Electrical Division. Founded in 1969, WJETS exists to “assist, develop and foster the education and advanced training of Red Seal electricians” and to strengthen the apprenticeship system. Its programs serve Vancouver Island, Northern B.C., the Yukon and the Kootenays, ensuring consistent, high quality training across our vast region.
IBEW apprenticeships follow an earn while you learn model. Apprentices balance classroom education with hands on work under the guidance of experienced journeymen, earning wages and benefits from day one while graduating debt free. This combination of theory and real world experience builds confident, well rounded tradespeople and ensures our industry maintains the highest standards of skill and safety.
Looking Ahead
We congratulate Brian, Alexandrea and Jonathan on their achievements and look forward to seeing them become journeymen and future leaders within our locals. A strong apprenticeship program is the foundation of a strong union and it secures our trade’s future, raises standards across the industry and provides opportunities for the next generation of electricians.
Let’s continue to support our apprentices and invest in training that builds a brighter future for everyone.
Local 993 – Northern B.C. & Yukon:
Local 993 represents electrical workers across northern British Columbia and the Yukon, advocating for fair wages, safe workplaces and industry leading training. Brother Jonathan Derrick exemplifies our region’s resilience and spirit, proving that no job is too remote or challenging for a skilled union electrician.
Local 1003 – Kootenay Region:
Established in 1947 in Nelson, B.C., IBEW Local 1003 represents workers in construction, manufacturing, maintenance and Nelson Hydro. Members of this local have built hydro electric dams on the Kootenay, Columbia and Pend’Orielle Rivers and industrial, institutional, commercial and residential projects across the Kootenays. Brother Brian Ouellette carries on that legacy through his hard work and dedication to his craft.
Local 230 – Vancouver Island and Offshore Communities:
Founded in 1902, IBEW Local 230 has been representing electrical workers on Vancouver Island for over a century. The local’s jurisdiction covers utility, inside wire, marine, communications, cable television, railroad and electrical manufacturing work on Vancouver Island and its offshore islands west of the main navigational channel. Over the years, Local 230 members have wired everything from power plants to marine shipyards, and their apprentices continue that tradition today.
