Honouring Indigenous Peoples and Supporting Inclusion in the Trades
Posted on June 20, 2025 4:00 pm
On June 21, IBEW Local 993 proudly celebrates National Indigenous Peoples Day. This is a day to recognize and honour the history, cultures, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across British Columbia and Canada.
This day is also a chance to remind ourselves why building an inclusive workforce is so important. At IBEW 993, 11.4% of our apprentices identify as Indigenous, which is higher than the 5.9% Indigenous population in British Columbia. We are proud of this number. It shows the progress we have made through more than a decade of hard work and commitment.
We do not believe that diversity and inclusion are just about fairness or checking a box. A workforce that includes people from many backgrounds helps us think in new ways and solve problems better. It also helps us understand and serve the communities where we work. A strong workforce includes everyone.
Reaching Out and Training New Workers
We work to connect with Indigenous people, women, and other underrepresented groups. We share information about careers in the electrical trades and offer training and apprenticeships. Our goal is to make sure all workers feel welcome, respected, and supported from their first day on the job.
Mentorship and Support
We understand that some members face challenges others may not. That is why we offer mentorship programs that connect experienced workers with newer members. This support helps build confidence and creates a stronger sense of belonging.
Creating a Safe and Inclusive Workplace
We want every member to feel safe and respected at work. We provide education to help prevent bias and harassment. We are working to create job sites and union spaces where everyone can do their best.
Speaking Up for Change
IBEW 993 works with employers, schools, and government to help remove barriers in the trades. We speak up for policies that support diversity and inclusion so that more people can build a career in this industry.
On National Indigenous Peoples Day, we honour Indigenous communities and celebrate how far we have come. We are also looking ahead, knowing there is more work to do. Together, we can keep building a stronger, more welcoming union for everyone.
