On Monday, September 28, the Piping Institute College and the Prince George Nechako Aboriginal Employment and Training Association (PGNAETA) invited IBEW 993 to take part in their ongoing “Try Trades” program. This program gives students the chance to explore different trades and learn more about potential career paths in the skilled trades sector.
James Olson represented IBEW 993 and presented a short Basic Electricity course to the group. Students built their own extension cords from start to finish. This project allowed them to apply what they had learned in a practical way. At the end of the session, each student was able to take their finished extension cord home as a useful reminder of what they had accomplished.
The students were engaged and asked thoughtful questions throughout the course. Many showed genuine interest in learning more about the electrical trade. It was a positive experience for everyone involved, and we hope to see some of these students pursue apprenticeships in the future.
IBEW 993 is proud to support programs like “Try Trades”, which help young people discover rewarding careers in the skilled trades and strengthen local communities.
