2022 Day of Mourning

Posted by Darryl on April 26, 2022

Today is the National Day of Mourning on with several ceremonies in our jurisdiction. Every year workers mark April 28 by gathering in memory of those who died, and in solidarity with those who were injured or became ill as a result of their job.

Over the past two years, we have lost friends, colleagues and family members to the pandemic, many of whom got sick at work. Others are still dealing with the effects of long-COVID. While we look forward to gathering together in their honour, we ask everyone in attendance to respect local health guidelines and gather safely. (Include your own specific guidelines here, as desired – masking, social distancing, capacity limits, etc)

Each year more than 1,000 workers are killed at work, and hundreds of thousands more are injured or made sick as a result of their jobs. Employers must take responsibility for identifying and eliminating hazards in their workplaces and in their supply chains.

EASTER GREETINGS from the 1st District Office

Posted by Darryl on April 14, 2022

On behalf of the First District staff, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your families a very safe and happy Easter long weekend.  Last year at this time, most of us were in some form of lockdown, and even though restrictions have been lifted in most provinces, the COVID pandemic is still very much with us.

Please, if you are gathering with family and friends, exercise caution!  Additionally, as we celebrate Easter as we choose, or simply enjoy this long weekend, keep the people of the Ukraine in our thoughts; we can only imagine the horrors they are facing.

Thank you for all that you do for the benefit of our members and the advancement of the IBEW and the labour movement.

In solidarity,

Tom Reid
International Vice President, First District (Canada)

Be More Than A Bystander in Prince George

Posted by Darryl on March 15, 2022

The reality is gender based violence happens every day in more ways than should be labeled “acceptable”. Show your support for our IBEW Sisters and Brother, Doug Mcdonald (front & center), volunteering to learn, to make a stand against gender-based violence by asking for your jobsite to request this presentation (2 hrs). The Be More Than A Bystander program is an important initiative that allows us to understand how we can be a part of the change IBEW members want to see and be a part of.
