The Size of IBEW 993’s Jurisdiction

The other day, Mollie asked me how big IBEW 993's jurisdiction is. From looking at the jurisdiction map, you can see it's quite large, but how large?

Initially I thought it wouldn't be possible, but then I remembered that almost a decade ago I plotted our jurisdiction so I could add it to maps. I believe it was almost 1000 longitude and latitude points. I had all the information in a file that could be imported into Google Maps or Google Earth, so it would make sense that there would be an easy way to work out the area inside the polygon that these points created.

There was not an easy way to figure out the area inside that polygon.

As luck would have it though, I have a good friend that works in the Geographic Information System field. I sent him my file with all the points and after a short while he gave me the answer. From is explanation of what needed to be done, it's a good thing that I sent it to him and didn't bother trying after my first few attempts.

IBEW LU 993's Jurisdiction covers 1,284,750 square kilometers or 496,044 square miles.
